Quiz mode
Unlock your apps by answering questions from your own notes
In Quiz mode, Screenwage writes multiple-choice questions from what you are studying. When you open a locked app such as TikTok or Instagram, you answer a short round: get most of them right and your apps open for 10, 20 or 30 minutes. Missed questions come back later until you know them.

How Quiz mode works
- Add what you are studying: type or paste notes, take photos of textbook pages or worksheets, or pick a PDF.
- Screenwage reads the text on your iPhone and writes a bank of multiple-choice questions from it.
- Open a locked app. Its lock screen offers a quiz: tap Take quiz, then the notification that appears, and the round opens in Screenwage.
- Answer the round. Pass, and your locked apps open for the time you chose. Miss, and you can try again with new questions after a 30-second pause.
Choose how hard the quiz is
A round is 3 to 10 questions; 3 is the default. You pass by getting more than half right, so 2 of 3, 3 of 5 or 6 of 10.
You also choose the difficulty: Normal for recall of the main points, Hard for questions that make you apply what you learned, or Mix for both. The unlock lasts 10, 20 or 30 minutes.
Why studying before scrolling works
Answering questions from memory is retrieval practice, one of the best-studied ways to remember material. Quiz mode puts a few minutes of it in front of the moment you reach for your phone, which is the moment you would otherwise lose. Questions you miss come back in later rounds, so the bank keeps steering you toward what you do not know yet.
What happens to your notes
Photos and PDFs are turned into text on your iPhone, and your files stay on the device. Only that text is sent, once, to write your questions, and Screenwage does not keep it on its servers. Making new questions needs a connection; answering the questions you already have works offline. Details are in the privacy policy.
Who Quiz mode is for
Students revising for exams, people learning a language or studying for a certification, and anyone who wants their scrolling to pay a small toll in learning first. If you would rather earn time by focusing, use the default Earn mode; if you want apps off during set hours, use Lock hours.
Questions
- Can I use Quiz mode for any subject?
- Yes. Questions are written from the material you add, so anything you can type, photograph or save as a PDF works: biology notes, history chapters, vocabulary lists or a work manual.
- What if I fail the quiz?
- Your apps stay locked. After a 30-second pause you can try again with different questions, and the ones you missed come back in later rounds.
- Does Quiz mode cost extra?
- No. It is part of the Screenwage subscription.
