How to block Instagram on iPhone
To block Instagram on iPhone, set a Screen Time App Limit for Instagram with Block at End of Limit and a passcode, then block instagram.com in Safari too. Instagram’s own Daily limit (Your activity → Time spent) is only a reminder you can close. To keep Instagram locked until you have earned time on it, use an app blocker such as Screenwage.

Instagram’s own limit is a reminder, not a block
In Instagram, open your profile, tap the menu, then Your activity → Time spent. There you can set a Daily limit and reminders to take breaks. When the time is up, Instagram tells you so, and you can close the message and carry on. Useful as a nudge; not a lock.
In-app settings move between versions; if a menu is not where we say, search the app’s settings for “time”.
Way 1: a Screen Time App Limit (free)
- Open Settings → Screen Time and set a passcode with Lock Screen Time Settings (or Use Screen Time Passcode).
- Tap App Limits → Add Limit, open Social, select Instagram, and tap Next.
- Choose the daily time and turn on Block at End of Limit, then tap Add.
Without the passcode, the limit offers One More Minute and Ignore Limit for Today. With it, Instagram stays blocked until someone types the passcode, which works best when someone else knows it.
Way 2: block instagram.com in Safari
Blocking the app leaves the website open. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web & Games → Web Content, choose Limit Adult Websites, and add instagram.com under Never Allow. In Screenwage, add the website in Apple’s picker alongside the app.
Menu names can differ slightly between iOS versions; these steps follow iOS 17 and later.
Way 3: lock Instagram until you earn it (Screenwage)
Pick Instagram in Screenwage and it stays locked until you spend grains you earned by focusing: one grain is one minute. There is no Ignore button and no passcode to know; when you want Instagram, you lock in for a while first. Students can use Quiz mode instead, which opens Instagram after a few questions from their notes.
Can you block only Reels?
Not with Screen Time or any app built on it: iOS locks whole apps, not parts of them. If you need Instagram for messages, give it a short daily limit rather than a full block, or keep it locked and open it for a few minutes when you need to reply.
Questions
- Does Instagram’s daily limit block the app?
- No. It shows a reminder when your time is up, and you can close it and keep scrolling. To actually block Instagram, use a Screen Time App Limit with Block at End of Limit and a passcode, or an app blocker such as Screenwage.
- Can I block Instagram Reels but keep messages?
- Not on iPhone: Screen Time and the apps built on it lock whole apps. A short daily limit, or opening Instagram only briefly when you need to reply, is the closest option.
