Screenwage vs Apple Screen Time
Apple Screen Time is built into every iPhone and can limit apps per day, but unless you set a passcode and turn on Block at End of Limit, a limit offers One More Minute, Remind Me in 15 Minutes or Ignore Limit for Today. Screenwage is built on the same Screen Time system and adds a rule you cannot tap past: time on locked apps is earned by focusing.

Why Screen Time limits are easy to ignore
Screen Time’s App Limits are designed as reminders for adults. When a limit is reached without a passcode, the screen lets you extend it, and extending becomes a habit of its own. With a Screen Time passcode and Block at End of Limit turned on, the app is blocked properly, but then you need someone else to hold the passcode, or you know it yourself and type it in.
Apple explains the setup in its guide to setting schedules and limits on iPhone.
What Screenwage adds
- A way back in that is not a bypass. Instead of a passcode or an Ignore button, you earn minutes by focusing.
- Proof of focus. Sessions are measured with the phone’s monotonic clock and can check the phone stays put, so time is earned honestly.
- A choice of rules. Lock hours for school or work and Quiz mode for study, alongside earning.
- Privacy kept. Apple hands Screenwage the apps you lock as anonymous tokens that stay on your iPhone.
Side by side
| Screenwage | Screen Time | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Subscription, with a free trial on the yearly plan | Free, built into iOS |
| When a limit is reached | The app stays locked until you spend earned grains | Extend, ignore, or enter the passcode (if set) |
| Rewards focus | Yes | No |
| Family and child controls | Not designed for parental control | Yes, with Family Sharing |
| Reports | Your focus, earnings and streaks | Detailed device usage |
Use both
Screenwage does not replace Screen Time; it runs on top of it. Keep Screen Time for its usage reports and Downtime if you like them, and let Screenwage hold the apps you most want to earn.
Questions
- Is Screenwage better than Screen Time?
- For adults who keep ignoring their own limits, often yes, because there is no Ignore button: time is earned. For parents setting limits on a child’s iPhone, Screen Time with Family Sharing is the right tool.
- Does Screenwage need Screen Time turned on?
- Screenwage asks for Screen Time permission once during setup, because Apple’s Screen Time system is what lets any app block other apps on iPhone.
