For students
An app blocker for studying
Screenwage is an iPhone app blocker built around studying. Quiz mode asks a few questions from your own notes before TikTok or Instagram opens, Lock hours keeps apps asleep during school, and focus sessions earn screen time back for later. It is for people 13 and older.
Updated
Three ways Screenwage helps you study
- [Quiz mode](/quiz-mode/) for exam season: your notes become multiple-choice questions, and a locked app opens when you get most of a short round right.
- [Lock hours](/lock-hours/) for school days: apps stay locked during the hours you set, with a 5-minute break earned every 30 minutes.
- Earn mode for homework: focus sessions pour grains into your hourglass, and each grain buys one minute of scrolling later. How it works.
One mode is on at a time, and you can switch whenever no lock or session is running.
Exam season: revise every time you reach for TikTok
Add what you are studying as typed notes, photos of pages or a PDF. Screenwage writes multiple-choice questions from it. When you open a locked app, you answer a round of 3 to 10 questions at Normal, Hard or Mixed difficulty; pass, and your apps open for 10, 20 or 30 minutes. Questions you miss come back in later rounds, so the bank keeps steering you to what you have not learned yet.
School days: lock apps during class hours
Set your school days and hours once, for example Monday to Friday, 8 to 3. Your chosen apps stay locked in those hours and are free outside them. Three emergency unlocks a day sit behind a 5-second hold, and Calls, Messages and Maps are never locked unless you choose them.
Homework: earn your scrolling
Start a focus session and put the phone down. Stay Put pauses earning if the phone moves, and [Focus Dock](/focus-dock/) uses the camera to place a zone on your desk and plays an alarm if you lift the phone early. Sessions of 50 minutes or more earn a quarter extra, so long, quiet study blocks pay best.
Private by design
Your notes, photos and PDFs are turned into text on your iPhone. Only that text is sent, once, to write questions, and it is not kept on Screenwage’s servers. Screenwage never learns which apps you lock. Details are in the privacy policy.
A note for parents
Screenwage is a self-control tool that a student sets up for themselves, not parental control: it has no way for a parent to watch or lock a child’s phone. To manage a child’s iPhone, use Apple Screen Time with Family Sharing. Students under 18 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to use Screenwage (terms).
Questions
- Is there an app that makes you answer questions before you can open TikTok?
- Yes. In Screenwage’s Quiz mode, a locked app such as TikTok opens only after you answer a short quiz written from your own study notes. Get most of the questions right and it opens for 10, 20 or 30 minutes.
- Can Screenwage block apps during school hours?
- Yes. Lock hours keeps the apps you choose locked on the days and hours you set, such as school days 8 to 3, with earned breaks and three emergency unlocks a day.
- Can my parents see what I do in Screenwage?
- No. Screenwage has no parent view, and it never learns which apps you lock: Apple keeps that list on your iPhone.
